We have all at times felt out of control when given more than we can handle. Everyone has a different way of dealing with life’s pressures; some cope better than others, yet most people struggle to do even the simplest of tasks when faced with too much to handle.
Here are a few simple tips that can help you regain your focus and get through your demanding routine at times of being overwhelmed.
- Take time out to clear your mind and find focus. As difficult as this may be when faced with deadlines and time pressures, we need to find clarity of mind first before we tackle what needs to be done.
- Create space and order in your work environment. Clutter and disorder can add to your stress levels by making you feel less in control.
- Put together a gratitude list. Think of all those things one can be grateful for. Having a positive mindset is a prerequisite for productivity.
- Switch off social media alerts and take messages temporarily. Receiving constant calls, sms’s, emails and notifications can add significantly to your stress levels.
- Write down the influx of all your thoughts on a piece of paper.
- Prioritize your tasks, be strict on deciding what is important and what can wait. Place those items that are really important at the top of your list and write all remaining tasks on a second list. Tackle a shortlist instead of trying to do everything at once.
- Postpone or cancel meetings that don’t serve an immediate purpose. Many people get caught up in meetings which are often not necessary.
- Learn to delegate and outsource functions to other people.
- Ask for help
- Learn to say no
- Ensure you take time to focus on your mental and physical health, whether this is in the form of exercise, meditation or any other activity that stimulates your mind and body.
Once we are able to master some of these techniques, dealing with life’s demands may become a more manageable experience, thereby improving our productivity, as well as our general emotional wellbeing.
