Time to reflect

When last did you take time out to reflect on where you are and where you are going? Most of us tend to do this once or twice a year, if at all, either at the beginning or the end of a year. The problem with this is that before we know it we are sucked into the busy routine of life, doing things that demand our time and energy without achieving what is really meaningful.

To live a purposeful and balanced life, maybe we should be spending more time reflecting on where we are, what we are doing and whether we are moving in our chosen direction, instead of just ‘being busy’. Reflection should be a regular activity that forces us to reassess and balance our lives to lead a more fulfilled and successful life.

So… when last did you take time out to reflect on how you are spending the valuable hours of your day?

Life is a careful balancing act. With the challenges and demands that we face every day, it isn’t easy, from work pressures to family commitments and social responsibilities. What is the right formula to decide on how much time and effort to put into family, work, health, self-development, relationships, etc?

There is no recipe or guideline to say how much time or energy we should be investing in any one part of our lives. Only you will know, but in order to establish this you need to step out of the rat race and reflect on what counts; decide what matters most to you.

The choice of what we focus on will, however, determine the outcome of where we are in time to come.

The challenge we face is to ensure that our commitment and focus on any one segment of our life does not compromise other areas. If you are spending too much time on your hobbies, or too many late hours at the office, it could be having a negative effect on your family or on your health.

The same applies to how we spend and invest money. Where is your money going? How much is being spent on lifestyle and how much of your income is being invested for future wealth creation? Ultimately it is also a balancing act between immediate gratification and building future financial security.

In order to change the direction we are moving in, we need to pause and reflect on where we are headed.
